DunLash Ultra Container Desiccant Specifications

CaCl₂-Based Moisture Absorption · SGS Compliant · FCC Approved

What is DunLash Ultra?

DunLash Ultra is a calcium chloride-based container desiccant designed to protect cargo from moisture damage during ocean freight, road transport, and storage. Unlike silica gel or clay desiccants, DunLash Ultra uses a CaCl₂ formulation that absorbs and locks moisture as a gel — preventing condensation, container rain, mould growth, and corrosion inside shipping containers.

The DunLash Ultra 750g bag is the standard specification for container protection. It is independently tested against international standards and approved for use with food-grade cargo under FCC guidelines, making it suitable for a wide range of export cargo types.

DunLash Ultra is designed for container moisture control where high absorption performance is required, especially during long-haul ocean freight, humid routes, and temperature-changing transport conditions.

In addition to our container desiccant products, we offer a full range of lashing systems and cargo protection products to meet all your shipping needs:

How Many Desiccant Bags Does My Container Need?

The minimum recommended dosage for a standard GP container is:

  • 20ft GP container — minimum 4 x 750g DunLash Ultra bags
  • 40ft GP container — minimum 8 x 750g DunLash Ultra bags

Additional bags are recommended when any of the following factors apply:

  • Cargo is carried on wooden pallets with significant moisture content
  • The voyage duration exceeds 14 days
  • The container will cross the equator, exposing cargo to significant temperature variation
  • Cargo is exported from a warm, humid climate to a cold destination, or vice versa
  • The cargo itself is moisture-sensitive or has specific moisture tolerance requirements
  • The shipping route passes through tropical or high-humidity ocean zones

DunLash provides customised desiccant recommendations based on your cargo type, voyage details, and route profile. Contact us for a personalised desiccant calculation.

Performance vs Competing Products

DunLash Ultra 750g consistently outperforms heavier competitor desiccants at standard container humidity and temperature profiles. In independently conducted absorption tests at 30°C and 70–90% RH, DunLash Ultra absorbs a greater percentage of moisture per gram than competing 1.1kg products — delivering superior protection at lower cost per container.

This performance difference is particularly significant for long-haul ocean freight where containers experience temperature cycling over 20 or more days. DunLash Ultra’s CaCl₂ formulation continues absorbing as conditions intensify, while silica gel and clay products reach saturation and plateau.

Applications for DunLash Ultra

DunLash Ultra is suitable for container moisture protection across the following cargo categories:

  • Machinery and industrial equipment — prevents rust and corrosion on metal surfaces
  • Steel, iron, and metal products — protection during ocean and road freight
  • Leather goods and textiles — prevents mould and damp damage
  • Food and beverage products — FCC approved for cocoa, coffee, dried goods
  • Agricultural produce — grain, dried fruit, nuts, tobacco, and similar exports
  • Chemical products — moisture-sensitive bulk chemicals and intermediates
  • Military and defence cargo — meets high-standard moisture protection requirements
  • Glass and ceramics — prevents moisture-related surface damage and packaging collapse
  • Pharmaceutical products — where moisture control is essential for product stability

Why Choose DunLash Ultra for Container Moisture Protection?

DunLash Ultra provides high-performance moisture absorption for containerised cargo, helping reduce condensation, container rain, mould, corrosion, packaging collapse, and cargo damage claims.

Its calcium chloride formulation, high absorption rate, food-grade suitability, and practical hanging design make it a strong option for exporters, freight forwarders, manufacturers, and logistics operators needing reliable moisture control during transport and storage.

DunLash Ultra FAQs

How does CaCl₂ compare to silica gel for container protection?

Calcium chloride desiccants like DunLash Ultra absorb significantly more moisture per gram than silica gel, making them more effective for the large air volumes inside shipping containers. Silica gel is better suited for primary packaging applications and small enclosed spaces. For 20ft and 40ft GP containers, DunLash Ultra is the recommended solution.

Is DunLash Ultra safe to use with food cargo?

Yes. DunLash Ultra is FCC compliant for use in shipments of cocoa beans and other food products. It is dimethylfumarate free and complies with EU Directive 2009/251/EC. For specific food cargo requirements, contact DunLash for a product suitability assessment.

Can I dispose of used DunLash Ultra bags as normal waste?

Yes. Used DunLash Ultra bags can be disposed of as normal trade waste. The absorbed moisture converts the CaCl₂ to a gel that is sealed within the bag construction, making disposal straightforward in normal commercial waste streams.

What is the difference between DunLash Ultra and PacDry?

DunLash Ultra is a CaCl₂ container desiccant designed for large enclosed spaces such as 20ft and 40ft GP containers. PacDry is a clay, Montmorillonite, primary desiccant sized in desiccant units for smaller enclosed spaces such as primary packaging, instrument cases, electronics packaging, and pharmaceutical storage. They serve different applications and are often used together.

How many DunLash Ultra bags are needed for a container?

A standard 20ft GP container requires a minimum of 4 x 750g DunLash Ultra bags, while a standard 40ft GP container requires a minimum of 8 x 750g bags. Additional bags may be recommended depending on cargo type, voyage duration, humidity exposure, and route conditions.

What makes DunLash Ultra different from clay desiccants?

DunLash Ultra uses calcium chloride, which absorbs and locks moisture as a gel. Clay desiccants are more commonly used for smaller enclosed spaces and primary packaging. For full shipping containers, DunLash Ultra offers stronger absorption performance under high-humidity transport conditions.
