WOVEN POLYESTER LASHING SPECIFICATIONS

SGS Certified Strength Ratings for DunLash Woven Polyester Lashing Systems

Independently Tested Lashing Performance Data

DunLash woven polyester lashing is independently tested and certified by SGS South Africa. Each lashing product in our range undergoes controlled tensile testing to verify linear breaking strength, system breaking strength with heavy-duty buckle combinations, and elongation characteristics under load.

These verified specifications enable cargo securing professionals, logistics managers, and freight operators to confidently specify lashing systems that meet the demands of break-bulk, containerised, and oversized cargo transport.

DunLash Woven Polyester Lashing Range Overview

Our woven polyester lashing range covers four core products designed for medium to heavy-duty one-way cargo restraint. These systems are engineered for break-bulk vessel cargo, containerised loads, flat rack shipments, and oversized industrial cargo.

Understanding Lashing Strength Ratings

Linear Breaking Strength

DunLash woven polyester lashing delivers linear breaking strengths from 2,490daN for our 32mm lashing up to 7,890daN for our 50mm heavy-duty lashing. Linear strength measures the strap capacity without a buckle and is the baseline for load calculation.

System Breaking Strength

When paired with heavy-duty buckle systems, DunLash lashing achieves system breaking strengths from 2,850daN up to 13,850daN. The 50mm DunLash 750 with a heavy-duty buckle system is our highest-rated product, capable of securing the most demanding cargo loads in break-bulk and heavy industrial applications.

Maximum Securing Load (MSL)

The Maximum Securing Load is calculated at 50% of the system breaking strength. This is the working load figure used in cargo securing calculations and is the standard applied across the industry. For our top-rated 50mm lashing system, the MSL is approximately 6,925daN — equivalent to roughly 7 tonnes of securing force per lashing.

How to Select the Right Lashing System

Selecting the correct lashing system requires consideration of:

  • Total cargo weight and centre of gravity — determines the total lashing force required
  • Transport mode and route — sea freight generates different dynamic forces than road or rail
  • Number of lashings — the total restraint force is distributed across all lashings applied
  • Cargo shape and friction — irregular or low-friction loads require more lashing force
  • Compliance requirements — CTU Code and industry standards specify minimum securing ratios

DunLash provides cargo securing assessments to help you determine the correct lashing specification, quantity, and placement for your specific load and route.

Applications of Woven Polyester Lashing

DunLash woven polyester lashing is used for:

  • Break-bulk cargo on vessels — steel coils, machinery, project cargo, timber, and construction materials
  • Container securing — restraining heavy loads inside standard, open-top, and flat rack containers
  • Oversized and abnormal loads — securing cargo that exceeds standard transport dimensions
  • Industrial and mining cargo — equipment, components, and materials moving between inland sites and ports
  • Port operations — cargo stacking, handling, and securing at Durban, Cape Town, Gqeberha, Richards Bay, and Ngqura

Why Polyester Lashing Outperforms Traditional Restraints

Compared to chains, wire rope, and steel banding, woven polyester lashing offers:

  • Shock absorption — polyester absorbs dynamic forces from vessel movement, braking, and vibration rather than transferring them directly to the cargo
  • No corrosion — performs reliably in coastal, humid, and marine environments where steel corrodes
  • Operator safety — no sharp edges, no stored energy recoil, lighter to handle
  • Consistent tension retention — maintains load pressure over long transport durations
  • Faster application — lighter weight and simpler buckle systems reduce loading times

Woven Polyester Lashing Specifications FAQs

What is the strongest lashing system DunLash offers?

Our strongest lashing system is the 50mm DunLash 750, which achieves a system breaking strength of up to 13,850daN when paired with a heavy-duty buckle. This is independently verified by SGS South Africa and is suitable for the most demanding break-bulk and heavy cargo applications.

How much cargo can polyester lashing secure?

The securing capacity depends on the lashing width, the number of lashings applied, and the lashing angles. Our 50mm lashing system has a Maximum Securing Load of approximately 6,925daN per lashing (50% of the 13,850daN system breaking strength). Multiple lashings are typically used to achieve the required total restraint force for a given load.

Is woven polyester lashing suitable for break-bulk vessel cargo?

Yes. Woven polyester lashing is one of the most widely used securing methods for break-bulk cargo on vessels. Its shock-absorbing properties are specifically suited to the dynamic forces experienced during sea transport, including vessel roll, pitch, and sea swell.

Can polyester lashing replace chains for heavy cargo?

In many applications, polyester lashing provides a safer and more practical alternative to chains. It absorbs shock rather than transmitting it, reduces cargo surface damage, and eliminates corrosion risk. DunLash can assess your specific cargo and transport conditions to confirm whether polyester lashing is suitable.

Are DunLash lashing specifications independently verified?

Yes. All DunLash lashing products are tested and certified by SGS South Africa. Our published specifications are based on the mean of three separate tests carried out on calibrated tensile testing apparatus, as documented in our SGS Technical Inspection Reports.

What industries in South Africa use woven polyester lashing?

Industries using DunLash woven polyester lashing include steel and metals, mining, manufacturing, engineering, timber and forestry, construction, logistics, and agricultural export. The product is used across all major South African ports and inland transport corridors.
