Fresh Produce Container Cargo Protection South Africa

RAFT Kit · Container Desiccants · SGS Certified Lashing · Complete Protection for SA Agricultural Exports

The Fresh Produce Export Challenge

South Africa is one of the world’s major fresh produce exporters, shipping citrus, table grapes, stone fruit, apples and pears, subtropical fruit, and horticulture to markets across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, North America, and the United Kingdom. Every consignment that leaves a South African port faces a journey of two to five weeks in a reefer container — and must arrive in marketable condition to return value to the exporter.

Three factors cause the majority of fresh produce quality failures during ocean freight: temperature non-compliance, moisture damage, and physical cargo movement. DunLash addresses all three with a complete cargo protection suite designed specifically for South African fresh produce exporters.

The Three Risks — And the DunLash Response

Risk 1 — Temperature Non-Compliance

Reefer containers maintain a set temperature, but without proper air management, the temperature distribution across the cargo mass is uneven. Warmer zones near the door end or in blocked pallet positions can result in premature ripening, quality loss, and — for cold-treatment protocol cargo — compliance failure at destination port.

The RAFT Kit (Reefer Air Flow Technology), distributed by DunLash, improves cold air circulation inside the reefer container, reducing the temperature differential between the warmest and coldest cargo positions. For citrus under steri-cold protocol, this reduces the risk of a temperature exceedance that would invalidate the cold treatment certificate.

Risk 2 — Moisture Damage

Fresh produce carries significant inherent moisture. Wooden pallets — which are standard for agricultural cargo — also contain moisture that off-gasses inside the sealed container. As the container heats and cools during the voyage, this moisture condenses on packaging surfaces, producing container rain that causes mould, label damage, and carton collapse.

DunLash Ultra container desiccants absorb up to 250% of their weight in moisture at 30°C and 80% relative humidity, maintaining a dry container atmosphere and preventing condensation throughout the voyage. For standard GP containers and mixed reefer/ambient cargo, DunLash Ultra is the recommended desiccant. For reefer containers operating at very low temperatures, DunLash can advise on the appropriate dosage and product for the specific temperature and voyage profile.

Risk 3 — Physical Cargo Movement

Pallets that shift during sea transport disrupt the carefully arranged airflow channels between pallets, creating temperature dead zones in the cargo mass. Load movement also causes physical damage to produce, cartons, and pallet structures — particularly for fragile fruit like table grapes, berries, and soft citrus.

DunLash woven polyester lashing and composite polyester strapping are used to secure produce pallets inside containers, preventing movement during the dynamic forces of sea transport. SGS certified system strengths from 529 daN (composite strapping) to 13,850 daN (50mm lashing) cover the full range of pallet weights and containerised produce configurations.

In addition to our fresh produce container cargo protection solutions, we offer a full range of lashing systems and components to meet all your shipping needs:

Fresh Produce Cargo by Commodity

Citrus — Oranges, Grapefruit, Lemons, Soft Citrus

South Africa is the world’s third-largest citrus exporter. Citrus exports to the EU, USA, Japan, and South Korea require cold treatment under steri-cold protocol. The RAFT Kit is particularly critical for steri-cold citrus — temperature uniformity across all data logger positions is the difference between a successful cold treatment certificate and a rejected cargo at destination. DunLash Ultra desiccants prevent condensation on carton surfaces during the three to five week voyage. Woven polyester lashing prevents pallet shift that disrupts airflow between pallet positions.

Table Grapes

South Africa’s table grape season runs from November to April, with exports primarily to Europe and the UK. Table grapes are among the most fragile and moisture-sensitive fresh produce exports. Any physical contact damage from load shifting, or surface moisture from condensation, rapidly affects bunch appearance and shelf life at destination. DunLash composite strapping for pallet unitisation, DunLash Ultra desiccants, and the RAFT Kit for temperature uniformity form the recommended protection suite for table grape exports.

Stone Fruit — Peaches, Plums, Nectarines, Cherries

Stone fruit is temperature-sensitive and has a short export window from South Africa’s summer production regions (Western Cape, Eastern Cape). Precise temperature management during the voyage is critical for shelf life at destination. The RAFT Kit reduces the risk of premature ripening in warmer cargo zones, while DunLash lashing prevents load shift that disrupts cooling performance.

Deciduous Fruit — Apples and Pears

South Africa exports apples and pears from March to October, primarily to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Deciduous fruit is hardier than stone fruit or grapes but still requires correct temperature management and moisture protection for the six to eight week voyages to Asia and the Middle East. DunLash Ultra and the RAFT Kit form the recommended protection suite for long-haul deciduous fruit exports.

Subtropical and Tropical Fruit — Avocados, Mangoes, Macadamias

South Africa’s subtropical fruit sector has grown significantly in recent years, with avocados in particular becoming a major export category. Subtropical fruit exported to Europe and Asia requires different temperature management from citrus — avocados are cold-sensitive — making correct reefer management and temperature uniformity (without over-chilling) particularly important. DunLash provides product guidance specific to subtropical fruit export requirements.

Fresh Produce Cargo Protection FAQs

Does DunLash supply to pack houses directly?

Yes. DunLash supplies pack houses, export agents, and cold store operations throughout South Africa’s fresh produce regions. Contact DunLash to discuss direct supply of RAFT Kits, DunLash Ultra desiccants, strapping, lashing, and dunnage bags for your pack house operation.

How many DunLash Ultra bags does a reefer container of citrus require?

For a standard 40ft reefer container, the minimum recommendation is 8 x DunLash Ultra 750g bags. For long-haul voyages to Asia or the Middle East (35+ days), equatorial crossings, or cargo with high pallet moisture content, additional bags are recommended. Contact DunLash for a voyage-specific dosage recommendation based on your route and cargo profile.

Can DunLash lashing be used inside reefer containers at cold temperatures?

Yes. DunLash woven polyester lashing maintains its mechanical properties across the temperature range encountered in reefer container operations. Polyester lashing is unaffected by low temperatures and does not become brittle at the sub-zero temperatures used in cold treatment protocol.
